Chase: using a power of attorney

Bank Last verified 2026-10-17

Do they accept a POA?

  • Verified Chase adds a POA agent to an existing account, or lets an agent open a new account, after a banker reviews the POA to confirm the agent's authority. Opening a new account or changing beneficiaries requires the POA to specifically allow it. official source ↗
  • Verified Chase says a durable POA stays in effect if the principal becomes unable to make decisions; the agent's authority ends when the principal dies. A healthcare POA cannot be used with a bank account. official source ↗

Forms & documents

  • Verified Bring the POA document itself. If applicable: death certificate, letter of incapacity, physician statement, or resignation letter. official source ↗
  • Verified Chase also offers its own POA form for Chase accounts; to use it you must visit a branch in person. official source ↗
  • Verified ID: the agent brings a primary ID (driver's license, state ID or U.S. passport) and a secondary ID (credit/debit card, bank statement, recent pay stub or utility bill). In some cases the account owner's primary and secondary IDs are also needed. official source ↗

How to submit

  • Verified In person: schedule a meeting with a banker at a Chase branch. The named agent must be present to be added. JPMorgan Private Client customers go through their Relationship Manager or Senior Private Client Banker. official source ↗

Turnaround

  • Not published Chase does not publish a turnaround time. It says you may have to visit a branch more than once, and requirements may vary by state.

If they refuse or stall

  • Not published Chase does not publish an escalation path for a refused POA. In California, see Probate Code § 4406 on the Start Here page (applies to the statutory form).
