How to add a power of attorney to a parent's Fidelity account

Last verified 2026-10-17 against the official sources linked below.

Short answer

Fidelity accepts its own Durable Power of Attorney form, or you can ask to be added by certifying and uploading an outside POA that gives you authority. Either way, you need your own Fidelity account first. Fidelity says processing usually takes 3 to 5 business days, and it emails both your parent and you when it's done.

For the first 30 days, a new agent can move no more than $10,000 total out of the account (exceptions are possible) and can't make transfers on Fidelity.com or the app.

Step by step

  1. Open your own Fidelity account if you don't have one.
  2. Check your parent's POA with our California POA checklist.
  3. If your parent will sign Fidelity's form, use the “All states except New York” version (it has extra notices for California residents). Your parent signs in front of two witnesses and a notary; you can't be a witness. Your signature must be notarized too, and Fidelity must receive it within 180 days.
  4. If you're using an outside POA, upload it at Fidelity.com/poa, or use Fidelity's Durable Power of Attorney Affidavit and Indemnification form.
  5. Need a notary online? Fidelity mentions Proof and NotaryCam.
  6. Wait 3 to 5 business days for Fidelity's email. Questions: 800-343-3548.
  7. Plan around the 30-day, $10,000 transfer limit for new agents.
